Deep Abrasion Resistance

Deep abrasion resistance, also known as ‘abrasive resistance’ in stone worktops, refers to the material’s durability, which varies according to the mineral qualities of each stone, with a higher abrasive hardness value, which signifies more resistance to wear. The abrasive hardness of stones is assessed by ASTM International, an individual body using the ASTM C1353 method test to evaluate the abrasion resistance for stones that will endure high-foot traffic, such as work surfaces.

Deep Abrasion Test Method

The Deep abrasive test method follows three main steps:

• Before carrying out the ASTM C1353 test, the laboratory weighs the stone samples.
• During the ASTM C1353 test method, the stone samples are abraded using a Taber Abraser, a rotating turntable and two rotating heads to wear the stone’s surface.
• After 1000 cycles are completed, the stone samples are weighed again, providing results for the index of abrasion resistance and the bulk specific gravity of each stone.
