What is Angola Black Granite, and where does it come from?
This stunning stone, also known as African Black Granite, Labrador d’Angola, Angola Labrador, Nero Angola Granite and Angolan Black, is quarried in Angola and prevalent for its dark black-brown-blue colour and coarse grain.
Angola Black granite is not a true granite but an anorthosite, coarse-grained, dark-coloured igneous rock with mafic chemistry, as all the stones are called ‘black granites’.
Regarding quarry locations, Angola granite is quarried in some tens of hectares in the region of Lubango (Sá da Bandeira), with more than 70 hectares being explored.
Lubango has a rich history of colonisation and independence. Initially established in 1885 as a settlement for colonists from the Madeira Islands, the city was predominantly white until Angola gained independence in 1974/75.
Angola Black granite is one of the hardest materials in the world. With a Mohs rating of 7, it is only second to a diamond in hardness. Hence, an extremely durable option for kitchen worktops, bathroom vanities, and exterior cladding, as it is known for its strength and resistance to the elements. It is also a minimal-maintenance stone, making it an excellent choice for building exteriors.
