Grand Antique marble: Cretaceous Black Marble from the Pyrenees
The Grand Antique marble is a prestigious marble highly prevalent in luxury interior decorations. It contains clasts of black limestone and white calcite and was first quarried by the Romans in the III or IV century near Aubertin in France.
The fault breccia from which it is extracted was formed at the end of the Cretaceous period following the corrugation that affected the Northern Pyrenean area about 65 million years ago. One historical fact about the Grand Antique is that it was the marble of choice to construct Napoleon Bonaparte’s tomb in 1844.
Origin
Grand Antique marble comes from Aubert, Saint-Girons, and Ariège in France. Specifically, the quarries are in Aubert, a village in Arlege, South of France, and the Lez River Valley, southwest of Saint-Girons, western Ariège Department, central France.
