The Carrara quarries have been in operation since ancient Roman times, and the marble is still extracted using traditional methods using modern machinery. Unfortunately, the quarrying of Carrara marble is considered a dangerous profession, with many accidents and fatalities reported over the years.
Carrara marble is one of the most popular stones in London kitchens because of its natural pure white colour and fine grain. It is quarried in the Carrara region of Italy and is prevalent in high-end projects such as worktops and luxury bathrooms.
Calacatta marble, a close cousin of Carrara marble, is also quarried in Italy and is prevalent for its crisp white background with thick, dramatic veining. However, it is rarer and, therefore, more expensive than Carrara marble.
Fake Carrara marble, also known as “Carrara look-alike” or \"Carrara-style\" marble, is a type of marble that mimics the appearance of genuine Carrara marble but is not quarried in Carrara, Italy.
Fake Carrara marble is often a lower-quality stone such as limestone, dolomite, or similar stone, but not quite the real thing. These materials are cheaper than genuine Carrara marble, and you can use them to create a similar appearance at a lower cost.
It's important to note that fake Carrara marble will not have the same characteristics as the geniune Italian stone. The veining and patterns may be more uniform and less authentic, and the veins may not look the same up close.
Not all fake Carrara marble is less durable and more prone to staining and scratching than genuine Carrara marble. Still, it is virtually impossible to know its properties without laboratory testing.
When purchasing marble, it's always best to purchase from a reputable source, who can provide certifications and guarantees that the material is genuine.
