Colorado Gold marble is a type of Calacatta stone from the USA> It comes from the Yule Creek Valley of Colorado's West Elk Mountains at 2800 metres above the sea and around the upper Crystal River Valley at 2700 metres in height. Calacatta Colorado marble was first discovered in 1873 and remains prevalent today. Most recently, in 2012, the same quarry discovered the newly found and trendy Calacatta Lincoln marble.
The quarries extract Calacatta Colorado marble using channelling machines to cut the blocks and make vertical holes from top to bottom. Then, the block's bottom is cut into horizontal holes drilled into the marble's surface. Finally, the marble block is taken from the mountainside by inserting wedges into horizontal holes until it breaks free.
The cutting methods vary depending on the type of marble, but they typically involve two types of saws: diamond-edge wire and chain saws.
The standard process begins with a horizontal cut at the bottom of the marble's block.
- The quarry then sections the wall into smaller slab sections using vertical drills.
- Then, the quarry cuts the back and sides of the section with a wire saw to create smaller workable blocks.
- The quarry operators use a metal water bag inserted behind the back cut and filled with water to remove the block from the rock's face. Finally, large excavators pull the block down over a soft bed of marble fragments and rubble.
- The last step is block dressing, completed with tractor-mounted chainsaws, followed by quality control of the materials. The trimmed and curated block is then ready to be lifted and transported for storage and distribution.
