Compac Unique Portoro: Inspirational Design & Marble History
Due to its distinctive golden-yellow veins over a black backdrop, Portoro is one of the most well-known Italian black limestones. It has been in use since the Roman period, primarily in Luni. Its use has been ubiquitous in Genoa since the Medieval Era. Starting in the Late 1700s and early 1800s, it frequently appeared in ecclesiastical structures all over Italy. It was widely prevalent overseas by the turn of the 20th century, especially in European countries. It came from several quarry locations close to La Spezia, but only five are currently open. This stone’s visual attractiveness comes from its stunning veins, which tend to bleach during ageing.
Compac, The Surfaces Company takes the history and distinctive character of the Black Portoro limestone, rediscovering an ancient stone and adding modern features to its surface.
Compac Unique Portoro is built to last for decades and has natural-looking surfaces to withstand the rigours of daily activities, cut, chop and slice in the most comfortable ways, and provide an easy-to-use surface for busy homeowners who don’t have time to maintain marble.
More Resistant To Impact
Compac Unique Portoro boasts a strength of 6.4 out of 10 on Moh’s scale of mineral resistance. It compares to a strength of 3 in Nero Portoro marble. Unique Portoro has particular resistance to banging and scuffing compared to Black Portoro marble. As a result, it’s an excellent floor covering and worktop material.
Trusted
Compac, The Surfaces company was born in 1975 in Gandia, a town in Valencia, Spain. In over 40 years, the company has become one of the three largest quartz manufacturers worldwide, alongside Silestone and Caesarstone, thanks to its innovative solutions and high aesthetic principles. Compac was the first manufacturer to create pure white quartz worktops with its Absolute Blanc design and also the first to design marble effect worktops with Compac Carrara quartz. Today, Compac Surfaces makes quartz surfaces with the most sustainable features in the market with its range of Compac Obsidiana slabs which uses up to 98% recycled materials.

Don’t worry! Compac Unique Portoro’s maintenance is greatly hassle-free.
- Clean any spills and stains without letting them remain on the surface for hours. You can use water, a soft cloth and a mild cleaner.
- Use a window spray for the polished finish and the Barkeepers’ Friend sprays for the glacé finish product.
- Compac Unique Portoro is heat resistant. But don't let hot objects sit on the surface for too long.
- Avoid direct sunlight or UV radiation on the worktop to prevent fading.
Not at all! Compac Unique Portoro is one of the best stone surfaces you can install in your kitchen during refurbishment. It’s a particularly significant investment not just for its stunning looks but also durability and ease of maintenance.
It can also easily handle high temperatures (up to 150 Celsius), scratches and stains. Moreover, its smooth, non-porous surface ensures it is hygienic, impervious to dirt, liquids and bacteria, and highly workable.
No. As with all Compac quartz surfaces, Unique Portorois non-porous and does not require sealing. Phew!
The main difference between these two stones is that Portoro marble is a natural stone, and Compac Unique Portoro is engineered.
Portoro Black marble has a porosity of 0.5%, which makes it porous, and Compac Unique Portoro offers a 0.07% absorption rate, resulting in a non-porous surface. Similarly, Portoro natural marble requires sealants to protect it from staining every two years. In contrast, Unique Portoro is a quartz product that does not require additional surface protection.
Finally, because Unique Portoro is a quartz surface, acids cannot affect it and etch its surfaces as they can on marble stones such as Portoro Black.
