Terrazzo is composite worktop material comprising small pieces of marble, granite and other minerals embedded in a resin or cement base. The main difference between cement-based terrazzo and resin-based terrazzo is the type of binder holding the stones together.
Cement-based terrazzo comprises a mix of Portland cement, crushed rocks, and water. Once the mixture is poured and levelled, natural stones are added to the surface. The cement acts as glue to hold the stones in place. This type of terrazzo is known for its durability, but it can take longer to install.
On the other hand, resin-based terrazzo is the result of mixing natural marble and granite fragments with epoxy resin, hardener, and pigments. The stones are blended into the resin mixture and poured onto the surface. The epoxy resin acts as a binder to hold the stones in place. This type of terrazzo is known for its ability to be shaped more easily than cement-based terrazzo, making it easier to fabricate and install.
Both types of terrazzo can be polished to a glossy finish or honed and other textures, offering unique and elegant looks. The choice between the two depends on your preference, budget and the usage of the worktop.
Use a mix of soap and water for daily cleaning of terrazzo worktops. Then, dry with a cloth.
For grease marks, use soap and hot water. For persistent stains, use a neutral stone detergent cleaner. Ensure the worktops are free of dust and debris before cleaning.
