What is Verde Alpi marble?
Verde Alpi is a stunning green marble quarried in the Italian Alps. The origins of this marble can be traced back 150 million years ago, to the Cretaceous Period, when a shallow sea covered the region.
As sediment and shells accumulated on the sea floor, they were gradually compressed and cemented together, forming a type of rock called limestone. Over time, heat and pressure from tectonic activity caused the limestone to recrystallise and change into marble.
The quarries for Verde Alpi marble are in the valleys of Val d’Ossola, Piedmont, and Lombardy. The quarries are situated at high elevations, making the extraction process challenging and labour-intensive. The marble is extracted using a combination of drilling, blasting, and cutting techniques.
Verde Alpi comes in different variations, each with its unique colour and pattern. One of the most popular variations is the “Verde Alpi Classico,” a deep, greener colour with white veining. Another variation is the “Verde Alpi Extra,” which has a lighter green colour and more prominent veining. Finally, the “Verde Alpi Smeraldo” is another variation characterised by its intense green colour and subtle veining.
